Sacred Reciprocity

This workshop will have a strong focus on the Social Commitments around kakaw.

Observing our paths, how do we relate to the kakaw farmers?

How much do we know and have we experienced around the planting and farming of kakaw?

Do I use my social media consciously to promote my work with Cacao?

How much congruency is there between our words and actions?

How do I make my work an offering to the people most affected by current capitalism?

- Pablo Castro

In this workshop we will learn more about the history of the kakaw in ancient Mayan culture, specifically in two important stages, the “Classic” and the “Postclassic”, which together represented about 1,250 years of intense cultural life (250 AD-1521 AD).

The objective of the workshop will be for participants to have a broader knowledge of the importance of kakaw in the ancient times, specifically in these two very important stages of Mesoamerica, the “Classic” and “Postclassic” periods. Kakaw was such an important motif in ancient Mesoamerican societies and thanks to all the art and writing surrounding the kakaw we can better understand major social changes in the past!

Around the year 900 AD. There was a very strange phenomenon in Mesoamerica, which was the collapse of all the great stone cities. They all demonstrated fascinating scientific, artistic and spiritual development, but for some reason they were all abandoned. It was something so drastic that it has made archeology generate two terms to talk about these two different eras, what happened before this time period (“Classical”) and what happened after (“Postclassical”) of that strange collapse within various cultures.

The other half of the course will be about kakaw in the “Postclassical” Mayan era (900-1521 AD), a Mesoamerican time where the dark politics grows with more war, patriarchy and human sacrifice. Why? What happened in the history of the ancient elder? Why did the kakaw never stop being a sacred plant? Could this show us a dance between the ages? A dance between cosmic light and darkness? What are the keys to Light and Love that we can recover to build our present!

Meet your Guide

Pablo Castro

Pablo was born in Mexico. He is mainly an Archaeologist of the Mayan culture, but he is also a teacher of Capoeira Angola (Afro-Brazilian dance) and a singer-songwriter of medicine music. In the field of Archeology, he is very dedicated to hieroglyphic writing and the use of Cacao. With the guidance of Mayan spiritual teachers, he has been initiated into the practice of the Mayan "vapor bath" and the use of the Tzolk'in calendar. Because of his alternative theories, he works outside the universities, promoting his work at conferences, workshops, and also on trips to the Mayan pyramids. In his words: "the mission is to awaken the human spirit through ancestral wisdom, seeking that the Mayan past make our present flourish."

4 Modules

We will be meeting every week for four weeks starting October 12th

  • 1ST CLASS

We will explore the history of Mesoamerica from 900 AD onwards with an emphasis on the “Postclassical” era, with large capitals such as Chichén Itzá. In this stone city we see a strong presence of Kakaw, and with a strange Toltec-Mayan cultural mix. Among warriors and reptile gods, Kakaw continues to be one of the most sacred plants.

  • 2ND CLASS

We go back in time to the Classic Mayan period (250-900 AD), observing how Kakaw was part of a culture that developed an impressive level of science and art. We will see with Pablo new pieces, extremely beautiful, that were dedicated to Kakaw.

  • 3RD CLASS

We return to the Postclassical era (900-1521 AD) to continue comparing in the great city of Chichén Itzá how art changed after the civilizational collapse of 900 AD. The stone scenes and glyphs on Kakaw will allow us to see that a certain magic was lost, something was hidden in the Postclassical era. For some reason, the ancestors of wisdom retreated as the forces of war expanded.

  • 4TH CLASS

We will close with the fascinating “Classical” era, admiring more beautiful Mayan pieces for Kakaw, which show us how this Classic time of about 600 years could be a fascinating expression in the world of a high spirituality, of an ancient society in great connection with the stars, vegetation, waters and the invisible forces that animate human life.
